A NABE CHICAGO virtual event under Chatham House Rule with Barry Eichengreen, PhD; a global finance expert & University of California Berkeley Economics Chair & Distinguished Professor Economics & Political Science.

NABE CHICAGO member Karim Pakravan will lead the discussion with Professor Eichengreen focused on understanding the internal threats to the US dollar’s preeminent role in the global economy: its roots, manifestation, followed by a discussion of the current/potential impacts on the United States/global economy. Areas to be discussed—along with your areas of interests and questions—include:

  • Policy changes: what are the potential implications on the US dollar from:

    • Protectionism, the economic policy of restricting imports from other countries, enacted through various methods (tariffs, import quotas, geopolitical actions, sanctions, currency manipulation regulations, etc.)?

    • Government regulations, such as: interest rates, money supply management, visa prices/processes, rate cuts/hikes, debt ceilings/deficits, banking regulation, etc.?

  • Isolationism: the policy of minimal participation by a country in international economic relations by undermining multilateral economic institutions (G7, G20, IMF/World Bank) in order to devote the nation’s energies primarily to advancing its own domestic interest; includes perceptions/actuality of potential conflicts.

  • Other policies: as captured in:

    • Monetary policy: by central banks used to achieve macroeconomic policy objectives, such as price stability, inflation level, full employment, and stable economic growth.

      • How do monetary policies impact the dollar?

      • What about outside pressures on central bank actions—do these impact the dollar and in what manner?

    • Fiscal policy: the tax and spending policies of a national government—i.e., Congress and the Administration.

      • What are impacts on the dollar of government debt, deficits, foreign financing of a deficit, stablecoins?

After registration, you will receive an email with the Zoom Invite to the event session.
